Może najpierw zaktualizuj system ?

Spróbuj zainstalować hp lib z oficjalnej strony
nadaj uprawnienia i uruchom w terminalu mi tak się udało na ubuntu 16.04 z drukarką hp 3762 wtedy masz wszystkie sterowniki hplip (numer wesji)
wejdź w drukarki podłącz drukarke i wybierz sterownik z folderu musi być on wypakowany
